Description

Long-range Precision 1 is a 3-day course that provides in-depth training in the fundamental skills needed to successfully shoot at distances up to 2000 yards or to the maximum effective range of the student base off their individual accuracy potential. This course walks you step-by-step through each skill, explaining both the art and science, to ensure that you understand how to achieve optimal shooting accuracy and deal with adversities commonly found in the field or at matches. With our team of experienced instructors on hand to answer each question thoroughly and thoughtfully, we’ll train you to understand the mechanics of your rifle and how to properly engage with the environment in which you are shooting. This detailed process will give you a solid foundation of core skills that you can continue to expand on. Come ready to push your limits and test your skills with plenty of range time and challenging shooting drills. Whether you’re brand new to long-range shooting or seeking to compete in precision rifle matches, we provide practical, hands-on training to help you meet these needs.

Duration:

This course held over a consecutive 3-day period from 0830 to 1730 hours each day (e.g. full days, Thursday through Sunday). If you are coming in from out of the area, see our FAQs page for more information on travel and lodging arrangements.

Prerequisites

A basic understanding of firearms safety and willingness to learn.

What you’ll learn:

The principles of accuracy and fundamentals of marksmanship

Shot group analysis

Rifle set-up and maintenance

Understanding and applying ballistics

Range estimation

How to modify DOPE for varying environmental conditions

To balance speed and accuracy

How to accurately estimate wind force and the effect on your trajectory

What you need to bring

Rifle: High power bolt action rifle (6mm – 30 cal) or accurized semi-auto, sling and bipod. 5.56 SPR-style rifle is acceptable. Rental guns are available for an additional charge.
Quality tactical scope with mildot or range estimation reticle and externally adjustable turrets (e.g. Nightforce ATCAR or NXS, Athlon, Vortex, Leupold Mk4, Nikon Tactical, Swarovski, Zeiss, SWFA, etc.).
Your scope must have externally adjustable turrets in order for you to participate in this class. (Click here to learn more about externally adjusted scope turrets on our blog article.)
Bring your owner’s manual.
Minimum 100 rounds of match-grade ammunition per day. (77 gr strongly recommended for 5.56 SPRs)
Cleaning kit
Rugged, comfortable clothing, suitable for all weather conditions. We will shoot in any and all weather.
Small “go bag” or ruck sack that will be with you at all times. Your bag should have binoculars, water, snacks, elbow pads, knee pads, and ammo for the task.
A shooting or exercise mat; anything that can be rolled up and moved with you.
Ear & eye protection, sunscreen, and a brimmed hat (like a boonie).
Lunch, snack food, and water.
A small calculator.
Note-taking material, including notepad, pencil, and Sharpie.
Optional items: iPad or smartphone, belt magazine carriers; rifle cover (shemagh or towel); range finder; Camelback.
While the Long-range Precision 1 class is only moderately physically demanding, we do move around on rough terrain and haul our gear short distances. The most physically challenging aspects of the experience tend to come from the weather, so please be prepared for Colorado’s rapidly changing conditions.
